ABOUT US

From Dinghies to Domes

Welcome to Northeast Cove Geodomes, our family-owned and operated business. We are Danny and Lorna MacDonald, In the spring of 2022 we began to offer luxury outdoor experiences within a stunning natural setting. Currently, we have 4 geodesic domes situated on the Northeast Cove, directly facing Mabou Mountain, and the peaceful waters of the Mabou Harbour. Expansion plans are already underway to meet a growing demand.

The business has an interesting history that owes its existence to Mabou Sailing and Boating Club. In 2000, we moved back home from Ottawa to raise our three children. Lorna would continue her teaching career while Danny worked in the IT industry. It was not long before we felt a need for more recreational opportunities for our children. Danny purchased a sailing dinghy and taught himself to sail.

He then introduced the new sport to their children Noah, Catherine, and James. Our niece,  Siobhan MacDonald, also showed a keen interest in sailing. Thus, the Mabou Sailing and Boating Club was born in 2008, to get kids active and to stay active all summer long. Many kids would learn to sail over the next twelve years.

Catherine and Siobhan would become a sailing instructors and Siobhan would go on to becoming an international Paralympic sailing competitor, winning a gold medal at the Canada Games. She continues to sail at the National Club in Toronto and attributes part of her success to the Mabou Sailing and Boating Club.

They say all good things must come to an end. With the many successes came many challenges for our sailing club. The land was put up for sale in 2018 by the Smith family. Ray Smith, an avid sailor and supporter of the club offered first right to us as well as the municipality of Inverness County. Ultimately, we purchased the land in 2018

Unfortunately, the sailing club was unable to continue operations due to a lack of funding along with the impact of Covid-19 pandemic. Although the learn to sail program had to close, we remained committed to sharing the property with the community and to finding a new business model that could still provide outdoor recreational experiences to the public. The Northeast Cove Geodomes are well positioned to fill the void and we look forward to the new venture. We now offer the luxury glamping experience as well as swimming, kayaking, stand-up paddle boarding, bicycling, and hiking. We miss very much the sounds of kids learning to sail but also look forward to developing new experiences at the Cove and perhaps one day in the future, sailing will return.

What a perfect spot for a getaway! Fully furnished and kitchenette stocked. Not far off the beaten path for this place to be tucked away on a lake. We went at the end of the season, however access to the lake and canoes, private deck and BBQ available. Not more than 20 mins to the beaches! Will definitely be back!

These geodomes are beautiful! Extremely clean, very well kept and the heat pump was a big plus. We loved our 2-night stay here. It was awesome to have kayaks and other watercraft available for guests to use. The view from the dome was gorgeous, especially with the fall colours. Definitely would recommend staying here!

One of my favorite places I have ever stayed. Beautiful, peaceful, sparkling clean, comfortable bed..and best of all you can stargaze while laying in bed through the transparent roof peak. Amazing!

This is a must visit in Cape Breton! We stayed for two nights and could not have pictured a better location/ accommodations. The domes were very clean, and came with all amenities necessary. The view over the cove is amazing. The hosts were extremely welcoming and kind, and were there with anything we needed. We will definitely be retuning!

Danny’s got a special spot here with these super cool domes. Right on a beautiful inlet of water on the Mabou Harbour road. The pictures don’t give the full effect of the location and scenery. Such a beauty view of the water from inside and outside the domes. Bald eagles were cruising around everyday. We stayed in dome 3 but the domes are staggered in such a way that everyone gets a great view. The place was spotless when we arrived and check in was a breeze. Danny has kayaks and stand up paddle boards available for you to use whenever you want. We were really impressed with the whole set up, and now I’m obsessed with domes haha. Fantastic spot, would love to get back there!

These Geodomes are amazing!!! We stayed in one for four nights in July. The owners have thought of everything! There is HVAC, a grill, pots and pans, utensils, and a beautiful bathroom with soap and shampoo. We even had fresh flowers on the table when we got there. The bed was really comfortable. We enjoyed grilling on the deck and eating breakfast and dinner looking out on the water. We had daily visits from an eagle that soared by. It was magical to fall asleep looking up at the stars. We drove up to the Cabot Trail to hike. There is a dock on the property for swimming and sea kayaks to explore the cove. There are lots of great restaurants with live music in the area. The owners gave us lots of great suggestions for restaurants and daily excursions. We highly recommend Northeast Cove Geodomes!!

The hosts were very kind and thoughtful making sure we had everything we needed to ensure a comfortable stay! Could not recommend it more.

The Geodomes are absolutely beautiful. The Geodomes were outfitted with all the amenities necessary (A/C, BBQ, mini-fridge, hot plate with pots and pans, and even playing cards!). The A/C was great at keeping the Geodomes extremely cozy. Additionally, the Geodomes had a skylight which allowed for some amazing stargazing from the comfort of bed. It is clear that a lot of care was done in building and upkeeping this beautiful place. The hosts were incredibly kind and were always ready for some friendly conversation. The stay was truly amazing!

Booking online is easy and convenient.

We require a 2 night minimum stay. No pets or children under 10 are permitted on site.
