ABOUT US
From Dinghies to Domes
Welcome to Northeast Cove Geodomes, our family-owned and operated business. We are Danny and Lorna MacDonald, In the spring of 2022 we began to offer luxury outdoor experiences within a stunning natural setting. Currently, we have 4 geodesic domes situated on the Northeast Cove, directly facing Mabou Mountain, and the peaceful waters of the Mabou Harbour. Expansion plans are already underway to meet a growing demand.
The business has an interesting history that owes its existence to Mabou Sailing and Boating Club. In 2000, we moved back home from Ottawa to raise our three children. Lorna would continue her teaching career while Danny worked in the IT industry. It was not long before we felt a need for more recreational opportunities for our children. Danny purchased a sailing dinghy and taught himself to sail.
He then introduced the new sport to their children Noah, Catherine, and James. Our niece, Siobhan MacDonald, also showed a keen interest in sailing. Thus, the Mabou Sailing and Boating Club was born in 2008, to get kids active and to stay active all summer long. Many kids would learn to sail over the next twelve years.
Catherine and Siobhan would become a sailing instructors and Siobhan would go on to becoming an international Paralympic sailing competitor, winning a gold medal at the Canada Games. She continues to sail at the National Club in Toronto and attributes part of her success to the Mabou Sailing and Boating Club.
They say all good things must come to an end. With the many successes came many challenges for our sailing club. The land was put up for sale in 2018 by the Smith family. Ray Smith, an avid sailor and supporter of the club offered first right to us as well as the municipality of Inverness County. Ultimately, we purchased the land in 2018
Unfortunately, the sailing club was unable to continue operations due to a lack of funding along with the impact of Covid-19 pandemic. Although the learn to sail program had to close, we remained committed to sharing the property with the community and to finding a new business model that could still provide outdoor recreational experiences to the public. The Northeast Cove Geodomes are well positioned to fill the void and we look forward to the new venture. We now offer the luxury glamping experience as well as swimming, kayaking, stand-up paddle boarding, bicycling, and hiking. We miss very much the sounds of kids learning to sail but also look forward to developing new experiences at the Cove and perhaps one day in the future, sailing will return.
